rowing up in the
Washington
Heights
area of New York City, I am a
native New Yorker. After
graduating from New York University, I moved to
Greenwich Village
. Although
my
Masters is in literature, I have always loved painting. I studied at Pratt Institute, New York University, and Montclair State University. Before
retiring and moving to what has always been my
spiritual home, Cape Cod, I taught English for
thirty (30) years in
New York City
.
After painting most of my
life, I have touched on many styles - expressionism and abstract
expressionism being the dominant forces in my work. Whether I paint
landscapes, seascapes, interiors, musicians, horses or pure abstractions,
the one thing they all have in common is the depth, vibrancy, intensity and
juxtaposition of color so that there is always a brilliancy even in the
darkness.
Although expressionism,
as a style can vary greatly, what does define it in part is the artist’s
intent to reach the viewer on an emotional rather than an intellectual
level.
In the July, 2008 issue of Cape Cod Life, Arts Editor, Susan Dewey described Dorothy's art as "Bold abstracts with de Kooning-like confidence", "Brave virtuoso of color and form", and "Matisse-like interiors intricately rendered" and further described Dorothy's "Kaleidoscope talent" as "An artistic spirit without boundaries".

“I
am not so much interested in replicating the world for the viewer as I am in
articulating a more personal experience of my vision of the world. It is
this vision which I want to share with the viewer that inspires me to paint.”
